Born: October 2, 1986
Birthplace: Chanhassen, Minnesota
Acquired: Signed a one year, two-way contract on July 1, 2014
In their first post Vanek signing move, the Wild announced they had signed Chanhassen native and former Gopher Stu Bickel to a one year, two-way contract.
As all Minnesotans remember, Bickel only played one season for the Maroon and Gold. He was signed as an undrafted free agent following that season, but never made it to the NHL with Anaheim (the team that signed him). Bickel was acquired by the New York Rangers where he has since played in 67 NHL games. Last season he played all year in the AHL for the Hartford Wolfpack.
At 6'4", 207 lbs, Bickell is a big physical defenseman. He does not offer much in the scoring department, but can bring the physical play. Since he signed a two-way contract, Bickel figures to get more of his time with the Iowa Wild next year but don't be surprised to see him get a few games with Minnesota due to his physicality.
