Matt Dumba
Defenseman
Born: July 25, 1994
Height: 6'0" Weight: 181 lbs
Shoots: Right
2012-13 Team: Red Deer (CHL)/Houston (AHL)
Acquired: 1st round pick (7th overall) in 2012 NHL Draft
Previous Rank: 7
When the Wild drafted Matt Dumba, it was a bit of a stretch to draft him over notable d-men Jacob Trouba, Derrick Pouliot and forward Filip Forsberg. But Chuck Fletcher liked what he saw from Dumba and took the Red Deer star with the 7th overall pick.
Dumba projects to be a top line defenseman, combining his great offensive skills with intense physical play from the blue line. He frightens the opposition at both ends of the ice with his blazing slap shot and crushing hits. He was so impressive to the Wild right out of the gate last year, that he hung around with the team for a few games in the regular season before being sent back to Red Deer (he didn't play a game, but still not bad to be with the team that long).
This year, it would appear that Dumba will not make the Wild's roster out of camp due to the seven defenseman already on the roster. So it seems he will spend one more season in Red Deer before playing either with the AHL team or the NHL team.
Imagine the Wild's blue line in a couple of years with Suter, Brodin, and Dumba. Yeah, that sounds pretty neat.
